Dubai Creek and Deira

The best way to see the impressive buildings that have sprung up along Dubai Creek is from the waterway, and bustling Abra stations will provide you with a quick and efficient way to cross the water.

Water taxis and Abras
Dubai Creek is full of water taxis and Abras ferrying people around, and can be boarded at numerous locations along the banks. Abras are small barges that are powered by diesel engines and can seat around 20 people. Incidentally, the work force commute across the Creek on a regular basis and there are over 17,500 Abra crossings per day, so if you’re wearing expensive or light coloured clothing it’s advisable to remain standing for the trip, as the bench seats can get a little grubby. Abras can also be hired for private trips along the Creek and if you negotiate well with the boat captains, you should get a good deal.

Spice Souk
Once you land on the Deira side of the Creek, all you have to do is follow your nose and take in the breathtaking selection of spices, such as ginger, chillies, cardamom and frankincense, all displayed in huge jute sacks ready to burst at the seams. Wandering around the stalls is a pleasant way to pass an evening and the fragrances can really help to work up an appetite. This is a working souq which sells goods to locals and sailors from the dhows, and is a good place to buy incense burners, saffron, rose water, henna kits and shisha pipes.

Perfume Souk
One of the things Middle Eastern Arabs are known for is their strong, spicy fragrances and perfumes. The Perfume Souk is the ideal place to explore these alluring scents and a great opportunity to find your perfect smell. Besides traditional perfumes, they also sell branded fragrances from around the world, so it’s well worth a fragrant tour of the many shops.

Gold Souk
Even if you’re not looking for anything in particular, the Gold Souk is worth a visit to see the glittering array of merchandise on offer (especially in the evening). There are over 1000 jewellery shops in Dubai, and with no taxes, low import duties and high turnovers allowing for lower margins, it’s one of the cheapest cities in the world to buy gold jewellery. If you are looking to buy, don’t feel pressured into anything by the first shop, everyone’s prepared to barter and there’s plenty of choice!

Jumeirah Mosque

Situated on Jumeirah Beach Road, the enchanting Jumeirah Mosque with its huge central dome is the best known mosque in Dubai. Non-muslims can visit the mosque through an organised tour with the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding.

Falconry

Falconry has been practiced in the UAE for centuries, and hunting hare or houbara (the national bird of the UAE) to supplement the Bedouin diet, was an integral part of desert life.

Hunting expeditions were also used by sheikhs as a way of touring their territory and keeping in touch with areas that were not able to communicate. The sheikh would hunt during the day and set up a camp in the evenings, allowing the Bedouin to come and pay their respects and raise matters of concern.

In February 2003, one of the most remarkable events in the recorded history of falconry took place when a falcon owned by Sheikh Mohammed brought down a deer many times its own weight.

Today, falconry is practiced purely for the sport, and the two main species found in the UAE are the saker and peregrine. The main prey for falcons is still the houbara and hare, and there is a very successful captive breeding programme for houbara to protect the species.

If you would like to see these magnificent birds first hand, speak to one of the many tour operators who offer private and group demonstrations.

Desert Safaris

You haven’t seen Dubai until you’ve experienced a desert safari, a real ‘must do’. There are lots of companies offering exciting packages, which include camel rides, henna painting, sand surfing, dune buggies, dressing up in a dishdasha or abaya and magnificent displays from a local falconer. For the more adventurous, you could even try dune bashing, where you race over the sand dunes in a 4×4. In the evenings, you could be relaxing in a traditional Bedouin camp, smoking shisha, indulging in a local barbeque and sipping Arabic coffee or alcoholic beverages (Bedouin camps are licensed), while a belly dancer provides authentic entertainment. Some companies even offer overnight stays, where you can explore the desert night sky in all its glory and watch the sun rise over the sand dunes in a private tent.

Tips:
• Some Safari’s may not be suitable for young children and the elderly, as you can get
thrown around
• Wear comfortable and light clothing, as it can get quite hot during the day
• Wear loose footwear (e.g. sandals), as sand can collect in your shoes
• Be aware weekends can get busy, if you’ve got time, we suggest you go during weekdays
• Pack light, as you’ll moving around a lot
• If you go during the winter, take a jacket or wrap, as the desert can get cold at night.

Green Art Gallery

Throughout its storied history of nearly four decades in the Middle East, Green Art Gallery has had the privilege of bearing witness to the tremendous transformations of the regional art scene. In its earliest iteration as Ornina in 1987, the gallery functioned as an exhibition space above a small bookstore in Homs, Syria that was an important gathering space for intellectuals, critics, and artists of the time. In 1995, Green Art opened in a small Jumeirah villa as an intimate salon d’art that continued its dedication to Arab Modernism while still emphasising the critical discourse that shaped its earlier days. Exhibitions in these nascent days included artists who would later become today’s modern Arab masters, including Fateh Moudarres, Dia Azzawi, Paul Guiragossian, and Ismail Fattah.

Now in its second generation and newest form, Green Art Gallery re-launched in 2010 as a contemporary art space. Its program features artists working across diverse media, whose practices are rigorously researched, idea-led, and representative of our current moment. The gallery now represents a multi-generational mix of artists from the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia and beyond, including Turkish artists Hale Tenger and Hera Büyüktasçiyan; Iranian artists Kamrooz Aram and Nazgol Ansarinia; and Shadi Habib Allah, Seher Shah, and Alessandro Balteo Yazbeck, who are Palestinian, Pakistani and Venezuelan respectively. In this geographic mix, the gallery reflects Dubai’s position as a cosmopolitan—as well as artistic—entrepôt, even as it boasts of a strong parallel Arab Modernist program.

In 2012, Green Art Gallery initiated a series of collaborations, working with external artists, writers, and emergent curators and extended the reach of its program beyond the confines of the white cube. In this way, the gallery affirms its commitment to documenting, archiving and historicising—in addition to direct support—of artistic production in the region. In particular, the gallery looks to extend its legacy of discursive and programmatic criticality to the written word with its publishing program.

Located at Unit 28, Street 8, Al Quoz 1, Alserkal Avenue. Open 10am to 7pm, Saturday to Thursday. Call 04-3469305, email info@gagallery.com or visit www.gagallery.com.
